U.S. Energy Secretary: We have no plans for nuclear explosions

Chris Wright, the U.S. Secretary of Energy, announced that despite Donald Trump’s order to resume nuclear testing, the country currently has no plans for nuclear explosions.

In an interview with Fox News, he said the tests being discussed pertain to systems, not actual nuclear explosions. Wright added that the aim of these tests is to develop alternative nuclear weapons and emphasized that Trump is concerned about maintaining America’s military superiority.

The U.S. President also stated in an interview with CBS that Russia and China are conducting nuclear tests but are not speaking about it.

Wright’s statements are the first official reaction from the U.S. government following Trump’s order to resume nuclear weapons testing, an order met with warnings from Russia and China. Moscow declared that it would respond in kind if other countries breached commitments, while Beijing called for the U.S. to adhere to the global ban on nuclear testing.
