US Law to Ban TikTok
According to Iran Gate, US law to ban TikTok was introduced yesterday by Marco Rubio, a Republican senator from Florida, who presented a bill to ban TikTok and increase pressure on its parent company ByteDance, which received bipartisan support from both Democrats and Republicans.
American politicians are concerned about the possibility that TikTok and ByteDance could use shared user information, fearing that the app could be used for spying on Americans and censoring content. Google and Apple have also been asked to classify this app as suitable for adults.
Meanwhile, a group of 15 attorneys general have asked Google and Apple executives to remove TikTok from the content classification that deems the app appropriate for teenagers. They held these two companies responsible for ensuring accurate age ratings and warned that if this classification is not addressed, TikTok might face lawsuits from states.
Rubio’s office announced that this bill would block all transactions of any social network under the influence of China and Russia, adding that this bill has also been introduced in the House by Republican Mike Gallagher and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi. It should be noted that during the Trump administration, there were efforts to ban this app, which failed.
A month ago, FBI Director Chris Wray also stated that the Chinese government might use TikTok to control information or the software of millions of users and warned about the risk of influencing users’ thoughts.
Following this, various states across the US banned the installation of this app on government devices. As of last week, Alabama and Utah also announced a ban on installing TikTok on government devices.
