US Reaction to Tensions Between Iran and Azerbaijan

John Kirby, the spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, considered the Islamic Republic a destabilizing factor in the region regarding the rising tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan.

On Monday, April 24, John Kirby responded to reporters’ questions about the tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan, which have steadily increased in recent months, at the Foreign Press Center of the State Department in Washington, saying it is no surprise that Iran continues its destabilizing activities in the region.

Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have become highly tense in recent months, especially after the armed attack on the Baku embassy in Tehran. The failed assassination of a member of the Azerbaijani parliament critical of Iran has also intensified the tensions.

Following the assassination attempt on Fazil Mustafa, a member of the Azerbaijani parliament, four people have been arrested on charges of this armed attack, and the Islamic Republic has been accused of ordering this assassination.

On Tuesday, April 18, Azerbaijani media reported the arrest of 20 local operatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence in the country.
