U.S. Secretary of State: Europeans must decide on the snapback mechanism faster
Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, on Friday, April 17, while leaving Paris after discussions with his European counterparts, stated that the European parties to the JCPOA must decide on the implementation of the snapback mechanism. He added that the International Atomic Energy Agency has once again emphasized that Iran is still close to nuclear weapons.
The snapback mechanism refers to a process that leads to the immediate and automatic reinstatement of all UN sanctions against Iran and is valid until the expiration of the JCPOA on October 18, 2025.
The United Kingdom, France, and Germany, the three European countries of the JCPOA, had expressed readiness to begin the process of re-imposing all international sanctions against Iran before the start of negotiations between Iran and the United States, citing Iran’s non-compliance with the nuclear agreement and the expansion of its nuclear program.
