Confirmation of VAR referee’s mistake in the Portugal match
A member of the Uruguayan Football Association said in a radio interview that the head of FIFA’s referees committee confirmed the bad refereeing decision in the Portugal vs. Uruguay match.
Eduardo Ache, a member of the executive committee of the Uruguayan Football Association, said that Pierluigi Collina admitted that awarding a penalty to Portugal in the match against Uruguay was a mistake.
Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez was facing Bruno Fernandes late in the game against Portugal, but the ball passed between the legs of the Atletico Madrid player and hit his hand. Alireza Faghani, the match referee, let the game continue but later resorted to VAR and, after reviewing the scene, awarded a penalty.
The referee rightly allowed the game to continue, but the VAR referee called him over and made a bad decision.
The CONMEBOL president stated that he spoke with Collina about the incident, and Collina acknowledged that the scene was not a penalty. The referee’s mistake was accepting the wrong opinion of the VAR.
