Von der Leyen is re-elected as the President of the European Commission
Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Union Commission, was re-elected for a second term on Thursday, July 18, with 401 votes in favor, 284 against, and 15 abstentions.
In her speech requesting to take on the presidency again, she emphasized the necessity of a strong Europe in a time of fear and intense uncertainty. Von der Leyen told the parliament members in Strasbourg that she wants to fight with all democratic forces in the European Parliament against populists and extremists who intend to destroy the European way of life.
