Wagner Chief: Our Goal Was Not to Overthrow Russian Leadership

Wagner’s leader: Our goal was not to overthrow Russia’s leadership

The head of the Wagner Group stated that none of the Wagner members agreed to sign a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, in his first remarks after recent events, said in an audio file that we were targeted by the Ministry of Defense’s attacks but returned to our bases to prevent Russian soldiers’ blood from being shed.

He stated that our goal was not to overthrow Russia’s leadership, but it was decided that our group would be disbanded by July 1st, and our decision was to prevent this action.

Prigozhin added that we want those who made mistakes during military operations to be punished.

He continued that the President of Belarus asked us to resolve all issues through legal means.

Prigozhin defended his actions and the rebellion as a response to the attack on his forces, which resulted in the death of about 30 of his fighters.

In his 11-minute audio message, he said we started our action due to an injustice.

He did not provide any details about his whereabouts or his future plans.
