The Wall Street Journal: Trump has rejected returning to the initial agreement with Iran
The Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources, reported that Donald Trump’s administration has informed mediators that it has no interest in returning to the terms of the initial June agreement with the Islamic Republic, a stance that has obstructed the efforts of Qatar, Oman, and Pakistan to revive Tehran and Washington negotiations.
According to this report, the initial agreement, mediated by Pakistan, included reopening the Strait of Hormuz, starting discussions on Iran’s nuclear program, and ending the war, in exchange for reducing sanctions and granting Tehran access to some of its blocked assets.
The Wall Street Journal has written that Trump now prioritizes economic pressure on the Islamic Republic and is willing to wait to see the results of this policy.
Anna Kelly, the White House spokesperson, also stated that there are no negotiations with Iran underway or planned, and the naval blockade and economic exclusion operations will continue.
This report was published simultaneously with increased mediation efforts by Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar, and it says that the disagreement between Tehran and Washington over the previous agreement and the conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz has made it difficult to reach a framework for resuming negotiations.
