We Don't Have Information on the Number of Killed and Arrested, Says Maysato

Mai Sato: We have no information on the number of casualties and detainees

Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, stated that today we do not know how many people have been detained, where they are being held, or under what conditions they are living. We do not know how many people have been sentenced to death or have been executed so far, and we do not even know how many people have been killed. According to her, the official government statistics exceed 3,000 people, but reports from civil organizations indicate higher numbers.

She emphasized that behind these statistics are individual lives and mentioned the example of a teenager who had written about hope for the future in their diary before the protests began but was killed during the protests.

Sato also wrote on the X network that in December, she corresponded with the Islamic Republic about two death sentences and the situation in several prisons. She added that considering the January protests, what is happening now is not a new phenomenon, and the same patterns are being repeated on a larger scale.
