With the approval of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Babak Zanjani’s death sentence was overturned and converted to 20 years in prison.
The spokesperson for the Judiciary, in a press conference held on Tuesday, May 1st, announced that Babak Zanjani’s request for clemency was submitted by the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office, and with the approval of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, his death sentence was overturned and converted to 20 years in prison.
Regarding Babak Zanjani’s case, Asghar Jahangir said that the verdict was issued by Branch 38 of the Supreme Court in 2016, and it was anticipated that if he returned the assets and expressed remorse, he could be eligible for a reduced sentence.
The spokesperson for the Judiciary further mentioned that during his 10 years in prison, Mr. Zanjani cooperated, and assets outside the country were identified and returned to the country.
Previously, the head of Iran’s Judiciary had also claimed that the assets transferred by Babak Zanjani to Iran were sufficient to cover his debts.
