Zahrehvand, a Member of Afghanistan's National Security Commission, Uses Iranian Cement to Block Water from Entering Iran

Zohrehvand, a member of Afghanistan’s National Security Commission, blocks water from entering Iran with Iranian cement.

Abolfazl Zohrehvand, a member of the Islamic Consultative Assembly’s National Security Commission, accused enemies of exploiting the lack of a responsive government in Afghanistan and using water as leverage against Iran.

He said Afghanistan ostensibly claims to be a friend to us and even uses Iranian cement for dam construction on rivers flowing towards Iran, yet in practice, it acts against us.

Although Zohrehvand did not specify which countries he meant by enemies, he went on to mention the management of water transfer between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan and the Qush Tepa water canal, which was built during the presence of American forces in Afghanistan.

He called for interaction with Turkmenistan to transfer water entering the Caspian Sea to Iran.

These statements from the member of the Islamic Consultative Assembly came after Mohammad Javanbakht, Deputy Minister of Energy, reported a significant decrease in water resources at the Friendship Dam and challenges in supplying water to Mashhad, saying that reducing or eliminating Turkmenistan’s non-potable water withdrawals from the Friendship Dam could greatly assist Iran in getting through the upcoming summer.
