Russia accuses an American journalist of espionage
According to local Russian media, Ivan Greshkovych, an American journalist, has officially been accused of espionage in the country.
Mr. Greshkovych, an experienced reporter on Russian affairs, was arrested last week in the city of Yekaterinburg while preparing a report for The Wall Street Journal in the United States.
According to Russian media, this journalist has essentially denied the allegations against him.
The Kremlin had announced that he was arrested while committing a crime.
31-year-old Ivan Greshkovych is one of the most well-known foreign journalists in Moscow, and Steve Rosenburg, the editor-in-chief of Russian affairs at the BBC, has described him as an exceptional and principled reporter.
US officials have said they are trying to contact Mr. Greshkovych and have not yet succeeded, although The Wall Street Journal has said that their lawyers have been able to reach him.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the issue of consular access to this journalist has been resolved.
