Amnesty International calls for the release of Matiullah Wesa from Taliban custody.
The organization stated that Mr. Wesa’s detention by the Taliban is not legally justified.
Meanwhile, the Independent Human Rights Commission of Afghanistan, which operates outside the country, has also deemed the arrest of a cultural activist in Faryab as unlawful and has urged the Taliban to end the detention of political, civil, and cultural activists.
This comes as the family of another civil activist, Noorayel Kaliwal, has recently reported his detention by the Taliban in Helmand and expressed concerns.
Matiullah Wesa, a civil activist and the head of the Pen Path Association, which launched a campaign for girls’ education rights in Afghanistan, was arrested by Taliban members in Kabul two weeks ago.
Mr. Wesa, who traveled to remote areas of the country and worked to improve access to education for all children, had been threatened multiple times in the past.
