China loses its position as the world's most populous country, according to the United Nations

China is losing its position as the most populous country in the world, according to the United Nations.

Data released by the United Nations Population Fund on Thursday indicates that India is on track to become the most populous country in the world and is likely to surpass China by a margin of approximately 3 million people by mid-2021.

The organization estimates India’s population to be around 1.428 billion in its World Population Prospects 2023 report, while China’s population is projected to reach approximately 1.425 billion.

The United States ranks third with a population of approximately 340 million.
