The New York Times reports on Iran and Nicaragua discussing military cooperation

The New York Times reports that, according to leaked classified information from the US government, Iran and Nicaragua held talks in February about strengthening military cooperation as a way to counter US influence in Latin America.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, visited Nicaragua in mid-February on an official trip and met with Daniel Ortega, the country’s president who has been in power for the past sixteen years.

According to The New York Times report, which refers to information dated February 23, the Iranian delegation led by Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with senior military commanders in Nicaragua. According to the report, the Nicaraguan military commanders told Mr. Amir-Abdollahian that Nicaragua opposes US efforts to expand its influence in Latin America and expressed a desire to interact with Iran and other like-minded countries.
