A 40% Price Increase in Some Food Items in 2023
While the salaries of government employees are set to increase by only 20% this year and workers’ wages by just 27%, statistics show that the prices of some food items have risen by 40% in just the first three weeks of the year.
Field observations by ILNA news agency reveal that despite the promise of Ebrahim Raisi’s government to cap the maximum price of chicken at 63,000 tomans, this item is currently being sold at 84,000 tomans, indicating a 40% increase.
ILNA also mentions the approval of a 30% increase in the prices of domestic cars and reports that taxi and bus fares in Tehran have, on average, risen by 40%.
Despite three weeks passing since the start of the Iranian month of Farvardin, the Iranian Statistics Center has not yet released the inflation statistics for March of last year. However, February data from the Central Bank of Iran shows that March inflation, compared to the same month in 2021, has hit a historical record since the Islamic Revolution, soaring to 64%.
The February report from the Statistics Center also indicates that food item inflation in this month was about 715% compared to February 2021.
