Amnesty International is calling for the release of Matiullah Wesa from Taliban captivity.
The organization has stated that Mr. Wesa’s arrest by the Taliban lacks a legal basis.
At the same time, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, which operates from outside the country, has also called the arrest of a cultural activist in Faryab illegal and urged the Taliban to stop detaining political, civil, and cultural activists.
This comes as the family of another civil activist named Noor Ail Kaliwal in Helmand has recently reported his arrest by the Taliban and expressed concern.
Matiullah Wesa, a civil activist and head of the Pen Path Association, who launched a campaign for girls’ right to education in Afghanistan, was arrested two weeks ago by Taliban members in Kabul.
Mr. Wesa, who traveled to remote areas of the country and worked to improve access to education for all children, had previously been threatened multiple times.
