Amnesty International Criticizes Belgium for the Release of Assadollah Assadi

Amnesty International’s Criticism of Belgium for the Release of Assadollah Assadi

Following the exchange of Assadollah Assadi, a former diplomat of the Islamic Republic convicted of terrorist activities, with Olivier Vandecasteele, a Belgian aid worker imprisoned in Iran, Amnesty International issued a statement criticizing the Belgian government for releasing Mr. Assadi.

In the statement by this human rights organization, released on the evening of Friday, May 26, the release of the Belgian aid worker, who had been sentenced to 12 years in prison in Iran since February 2022 on charges of espionage, was welcomed.

Amnesty International, however, emphasized that the Belgian government, by transferring Assadollah Assadi to Iran, has created an atmosphere of impunity for the Islamic Republic’s government to target Iranian dissidents with extrajudicial actions, torture, and other forms of misconduct.
