Australian man arrested on suspicion of espionage

An Australian man has been arrested on suspicion of providing sensitive information to foreign intelligence agencies in the country.

Alexander Sergo, a 55-year-old IT specialist, was arrested by the Australian Federal Police shortly after returning to Sydney.

Australian authorities say he has been in contact with two foreign spies for the past two years, and it is said that these individuals offered him money in exchange for the information.

The Australian Federal Police stated in a release that an individual claiming to be an employee of a think tank contacted Mr. Sergo via social media.

Although the statement did not specify which intelligence agency the individuals he met belonged to, it is suspected that Mr. Sergo met them in Shanghai, China.

This is the second such case to occur in Australia in the past five years.

If Mr. Sergo’s charges are proven, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
