Deployment of Marines on Commercial Ships in the Strait of Hormuz
The Associated Press, citing official sources, reported on the United States’ plan to deploy Marines on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz to prevent Iran from infringing on the freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf.
This report, published on Thursday, August 3, based on information from five American officials, further states that such a plan is unprecedented.
Since 2019, Iran has seized several commercial ships and oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and recently seized two oil tankers and made an unsuccessful attempt to seize two more ships.
In recent weeks, the United States has deployed F-35 fighter jets in an effort to ensure the freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption passes.
