Increase in the Price of Some Medicines Up to Four Times in Iran

Increase in the price of certain medications up to fourfold in Iran

The repeated increase in the price of certain medications up to fourfold has worried Iranian citizens more than ever. Meanwhile, insurance companies are also talking about their inability to cover the rising costs. Ultimately, this means further emptying of citizens’ pockets in dire economic conditions and their continuous impoverishment.

On Wednesday, January 30, Tasnim News Agency reported that the price increase for some domestically produced medications ranges from 15 percent to over 150 percent. According to this news agency, in some cases, this price increase has even approached fourfold, and insurance companies also say they do not have sufficient resources to cover the increased costs.

According to ISNA, Mohammad Reza Zafarghandi, Iran’s Minister of Health, has stated that the reason for the price increase of some injectable drugs and ointments is the unprofitability of production in pharmaceutical factories. He has said that the government has agreed to the price increase to prevent shortages in the market because these factories had lost their production capacity due to rising production costs.
