Iran Withdraws from Hosting the Asian Cup
According to the Asian Football Confederation’s announcement, Iran withdrew from hosting the 2027 Asian Cup four days ago. The executive committee meeting of the Asian Football Confederation was held on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The most important decision of this meeting was selecting Qatar as the host for the 2023 Asian Cup instead of China, a country that had announced its withdrawal from hosting these competitions months ago due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The Asian Football Confederation’s website, in addition to announcing this news, also introduced another new topic. Based on this, India and Saudi Arabia have been introduced as the two final candidates for hosting the 2027 Asian Cup. The final selection between these two countries will take place in February 2023. Meanwhile, according to the AFC website, Iran, another candidate for hosting the 2027 Asian Cup, has withdrawn from this decision.
The Iranian Football Federation was interested in hosting the 2027 Asian Cup and had started a competition with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and India by submitting documents to the Asian Confederation. With Qatar being chosen for 2023, it automatically withdrew from hosting in 2027. However, according to the AFC’s announcement, Iran officially withdrew from hosting the 2027 Asian Cup on October 13. This is despite the fact that the Iranian Football Federation had not released any news regarding this matter.
