Mark Rutte will be the next Secretary General of NATO

The path for appointing Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of the NATO alliance was cleared after months of deadlock. Romania was the last NATO member country to announce that it would withdraw its resistance to granting this high position to the former Dutch head of state. The presidential office in Bucharest announced that Klaus Iohannis, the President of Romania, has withdrawn his candidacy.

Romania has now announced that it supports Rutte’s candidacy. This decision was made by the country’s Supreme Defense Council, which is chaired by Iohannis.
