New European Law to Stop Global Deforestation

Over a forty-year period up to 2020, consumption of products in Europe came at the cost of the loss of 10% of the world’s forests.

The European Union is on the verge of passing a law that requires companies to import goods into Europe that have not led to deforestation and the destruction of indigenous people’s livelihoods.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 420 million hectares of forest, an area larger than the European Union, have been destroyed and converted to agricultural use between 1990 and 2020. The European Union’s consumption accounts for about 10% of this global deforestation, with palm oil and soy constituting more than two-thirds of this amount.
