Protests Against Assad in Idlib
Hundreds of Syrians protested on Sunday in the city of Idlib in northwestern Syria against the resumption of relations between several Arab countries and the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
Some protesters labeled reconciliation with the Syrian government as betrayal on their placards.
The Assad government’s relations in the region had been severely limited since the war began in 2011.
On Tuesday, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister, visited Damascus, marking the first visit by a Saudi official since the conflict began. Prior to that, Faisal Mekdad, a senior Syrian diplomat, had traveled to Saudi Arabia.
Earlier this month, diplomats from nine Arab countries also met in Saudi Arabia to discuss ending the isolation of the Assad government, but they did not reach a conclusion.
The United States has not welcomed the normalization of relations between regional countries and Bashar al-Assad’s government, and a State Department spokesperson told Reuters that the U.S. position on this matter has not changed and that it does not encourage other countries to normalize relations with Syria.
