Mehdi Taj was one of the founders of transferring Sepahan Football Club from Sepahan Cement Factory to Mobarakeh Steel Company of Isfahan. In 2000, he became a member of the board of directors of this factory and carried out the change of ownership of this sports club. In the same year, he joined the board of directors of this club and from 1993 to 1998, he was the CEO of Sepahan Steel Football Club of Isfahan. He has also chaired the board of directors of this club.

Taj has become the president of the Football Federation while he was not without a share in the 92 trillion rial violations of Mobarakeh Steel.
