Russia Accuses American Journalist of Espionage

Russia accused an American journalist of espionage

According to local Russian media, Evan Gershkovich, an American journalist in the country, has been officially charged with espionage.

Mr. Gershkovich, an experienced reporter on Russian affairs, was arrested last week in the city of Yekaterinburg while preparing a report for The Wall Street Journal in the United States.

According to Russian media, the journalist has fundamentally denied the charges against him.

Following the journalist’s arrest, the Kremlin announced that he was caught in the act of committing a crime.

Evan Gershkovich, 31, is one of the most well-known foreign journalists in Moscow, and Steve Rosenberg, the BBC’s Russia editor, described him as an extraordinary journalist committed to principles.

American officials have said they are trying to establish contact with Mr. Gershkovich and have not yet succeeded, although The Wall Street Journal has said that the newspaper’s lawyers have managed to contact him.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that the issue of consular access to this journalist has been resolved.
