Spain: Social media platforms like X should not interfere in the internal affairs of countries.
Pilar Alegría, the spokesperson for the Spanish government, emphasized the necessity of neutrality for social media platforms during a press conference on Tuesday, the 18th, in response to a question about recent disputes between Elon Musk, the owner of the social network X, and European leaders such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Alegría stated, ‘We believe that social media platforms should always operate with absolute neutrality and without interfering in the affairs of countries.’
According to Reuters, a spokesperson for the European Commission also stated on Monday that while Musk is free to use his right to freedom of speech to express his views about Europe, the social network X must adhere to the European Union’s Digital Services Act, which requires large social media platforms to mitigate potential risks to electoral processes and civil discourse.
