The first Barbie doll with Down syndrome is being released
The first Barbie doll with Down syndrome will be introduced to the world by Ellie Goldstein, a British model. Ellie says about this doll, ‘I am happy that a Barbie with Down syndrome has been created and released.’
She says, ‘Seeing this doll filled me with joy. It meant a lot to me. Diversity among people is very important to me, and people need to see more individuals like me in the world. We should not be hidden from view and ignored.’
Mattel, the company that makes Barbie dolls, says this doll is part of the latest collection of new Barbies from the company, which will be released on May 3rd along with a Barbie with orthodontic braces and a Ken doll with a prosthetic leg.
To produce this doll, the Barbie production team consulted and collaborated with the National Down Syndrome Society in the USA and a group of medical specialists.
They made changes to the face and body of the Barbie doll to make it more similar to a person with Down syndrome, including a rounder face, shorter stature, longer torso, and a single line on the palm of the doll’s hand, a characteristic that many people with Down syndrome have.
