The New York Times reports that according to confidential information found among leaked U.S. government documents, Iran and Nicaragua discussed strengthening military cooperation in February as a way to counter U.S. influence in Latin America.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, made an official visit to Nicaragua in mid-February, where he met with Daniel Ortega, the country’s president, who has been in power for the past sixteen years.
The New York Times report mentions intelligence dated February 23, indicating that an Iranian delegation led by Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with senior Nicaraguan military commanders. According to the report, the Nicaraguan military commanders told Mr. Amir-Abdollahian that Nicaragua opposes U.S. efforts to expand influence in Latin America and expressed a desire to engage with Iran and other like-minded countries.
