UN Staff Reactions to Taliban Bans

UN employees’ reaction to Taliban bans

The United Nations says that 3,330 Afghan men and women employed by the organization stayed home on Thursday for the second consecutive day in protest of the ban on female UN employees in Afghanistan.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Thursday and called for the lifting of this ban.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized that the work of all employees of the organization is crucial for providing life-saving services to millions in this country, and Afghan women cannot be replaced by men.

He said the UN’s goal is to avoid a situation where women from other countries, who are not affected by the ban, replace Afghan women.
