Ali Motahari’s criticism of the mixed-gender dining halls in universities

Ali Motahari, a former member of parliament, criticized the recent protests against the mixing of genders in dining halls at universities in interviews with the Tehran University’s online network.

In response to a question about the main reason for the recent protests, he said that the movement that has been created has high goals, including economic objectives, foreign policy, why we have become a subordinate to Russia, why people do not have the necessary involvement in their own destiny, why we don’t have free elections. You have mentioned all these important goals, but mixing genders in dining halls is a wrong move. The main action is also wrong. Why should it be mixed when there are thousands of young girls and boys together in an inappropriate way?

After the Women’s Movement for Freedom, many students from various universities have boycotted dining halls in protest against gender segregation in self-service areas, or girls and boys sit together in the dining hall.

This issue has faced opposition from extremist groups, as well as university security and Basij forces.
