Iran became a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization
The Islamic Republic of Iran officially became a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization after 15 years today. Iran had been accepted as an observer member of this organization since 2005 and had submitted its request for full membership in 2008.
The 23rd summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization started virtually in Delhi with the presence of officials from Iran, China, India, Pakistan, Russia, and the four Central Asian countries. At the beginning of this summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Iran’s accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the signing of the accession note by Belarus to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, stating, ‘I am pleased to say that Iran is joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a full member of the family.’
