The population of the European Union is projected to decrease by 6%.
According to the latest population forecasts published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, the population of the EU is expected to decrease by 6% from January 1, 2022 to January 1, 2100, which is equivalent to 273 million fewer people.
This long-term projection of population decline comes after a period of population decrease in the years 2020 and 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the population of the EU has started to grow again during the year 2022.
Furthermore, it is estimated that due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the influx of refugees from Ukraine to the EU, the population will reach 451 million people by January 1, 2023, and is projected to reach 453 million people by the year 2026.
However, starting from that year, a declining trend in population will begin, ultimately reaching the projected level of 420 million people by the year 2100.
