Request for Imposing Sanctions on Members of the Iranian Parliament by the US Congress
A coalition of the Democratic and Republican parties in the United States Congress has requested the Biden administration to impose sanctions on almost all members of the Iranian Parliament in connection with the suppression of recent anti-government protests in the country.
According to a letter from 26 members of the US House of Representatives and Senate from both parties, out of 229 members of the Iranian Parliament, 227 of them should be sanctioned for providing a legal framework for the security forces of the Islamic Republic to carry out killings, torture, and imprisonment of government opponents.
These US congressional representatives stated in their letter, which was sent to the US Department of State and Treasury, that the Islamic Republic of Iran lacks democratic legitimacy and its parliament members are not representatives of the Iranian people.
