Dior accused of racism for its advertisements in China

Luxury brand Dior has been accused of racism in China for featuring a model of East Asian descent with her eyes pulled back in an advertisement, which circulated on social media networks.

The French company published this advertisement on their Instagram account earlier this week, but later removed it.

Chinese citizens have become increasingly sensitive on social media networks towards the portrayal of Chinese people in the media and social networks, due to the rising nationalist sentiments in the country.

This controversial image was released a week ago to promote Dior’s new makeup collection. The advertisement shows a model with her eyes pulled back, and below the image, it says, ‘Discover your feline fierceness.’

This image was then shared multiple times on Chinese social media networks, along with a hashtag accusing Dior of racism against Asians.

The state-run newspaper, Global Times China, has also published an editorial calling for Dior to apologize.
