The Russian ambassador threatened Finland and Sweden
The Russian ambassador in Sweden threatened that if Sweden and Finland join NATO, these two countries will become legitimate targets for retaliatory Russian actions, including military actions. Viktor Tatarinov, in a text published on the Russian embassy’s website in Sweden, emphasized that the membership of Sweden and Finland in NATO will almost double Russia’s border with NATO. He warned that Sweden, by requesting membership in NATO, is taking a step towards a precipice.
Following Russia’s military attack on Ukraine, Sweden and Finland jointly requested membership in NATO. This request must be approved by all 30 NATO member countries.
Hungary has agreed to Finland’s request, and this country only needs approval from Turkey, which Ankara has promised will happen in the near future. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesperson recently stated that Turkey has no problem with Finland’s process of joining the NATO military alliance. The Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Parliament also approved a bill on March 23 regarding the ratification of Finland’s accession protocol to NATO.
