Amnesty International says that the Taliban lack the will and ability to punish their members.
Amnesty International has called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to immediately establish an independent investigative mechanism in Afghanistan to uncover the facts about the allegations against Taliban members.
According to the organization, over the past 18 months, Taliban officials have demonstrated that they lack the will and ability to investigate the actions of their members, which severely violate the human rights of women, religious minorities, and ethnic minorities.
This proposed mechanism can complement the mission of Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
Amnesty International states that the Taliban have consistently and openly shown that they lack the will to conduct impartial and effective investigations into human rights abuses by their members, and it is time for the international community to follow up on their repeated public statements with concrete action.
