Mount Merapi Volcano Erupts on Java Island in Indonesia

The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency announced in a statement that Mount Merapi volcano erupted on Saturday, February 20th, and spewed fiery clouds up to 7 kilometers into the air.

The statement warns residents of nearby areas to refrain from any activities in the hazardous zones within a radius of three to seven kilometers from the crater.

Indonesia, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, has more volcanoes than any other country. Mount Merapi had its last major eruption in 2008, claiming the lives of over 350 people.
