Hundreds of Refugees Rescued on the Coast of Italy

Rescue of asylum seekers on the shores of Italy

Nearly two weeks after a boat carrying 150 asylum seekers sank off the southern coast of Italy, resulting in the death of 73 people on the evening of March 10, the Italian Coast Guard accompanied an old ship carrying 500 mostly Afghan asylum seekers to the port of Cortone, located in southern Italy.

During this operation, an Italian Navy ship also went to assist the Coast Guard and among the rescued asylum seekers, several women and children were seen.

Roberto Okiuto, the head of the Calabria region in Italy, which consists of five provinces, has stated that according to Frontex reports, a total of 1,300 people are moving towards the shores of Italy on three boats, and he has warned that these boats may encounter problems.
