Former Tehran Mayor's Reaction to Metro Curtain Unveiling

Former mayor of Tehran’s reaction to the curtain installation in the metro

Gholamhossein Karbaschi, the former mayor of Tehran, told Hamshahri newspaper that separation and physical confrontations in the past have been unsuccessful.

The issue of separation and such physical confrontations has been experienced multiple times in the past and has clearly failed in solving cultural issues, yet they still resort to this approach.

He said that using force does not yield results. For example, after passing through the gates, they remove their headscarves again. This behavior only turns into stubbornness and conflict between different management departments and the people.

He suggested that instead, they should add more vehicles and provide comfort for passengers.

Earlier, the release of images of curtains being installed in metro cars to separate women-only cars from the rest had caused controversy.

With the intensification of government strictness in enforcing hijab, restrictions have also been imposed on Iranian metros. Many videos were published showing officers reminding women to observe hijab in the metros, some of which showed that women without compulsory hijab were not allowed to enter the metro.
