France’s reaction to Kanaani’s statements about the detention of its citizens

The spokesperson for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the remarks of his Iranian counterpart clearly confirmed that the detention of French nationals in Iran was arbitrary.

Anne-Claire Lejeune said on Tuesday, February 23rd, that this is an endorsement from Iranian authorities and violates the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which is the foundation of diplomatic relations between countries.

Nasser Kanaani, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, had said a day earlier about the imprisoned French citizens in Iran that the French government had taken an interventionist approach towards recent developments in Iran, and the continuation of these positions would not be helpful in the matter of the detainees.
