The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the British ambassador.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic summoned the British ambassador in Tehran to convey its strong objection to his unorthodox and non-diplomatic positions, according to Iranian media. Iranian media reports suggest that the reason for summoning Simon Shercliff was his interventionist tweet coinciding with Journalists’ Day in Iran.
In his tweet, which he posted on Tuesday evening, the British ambassador wrote that Iran has named August 8th as Journalists’ Day. We respect the journalists who are not allowed to do their work and feel their security is at risk. Mr. Shercliff had requested the Islamic Republic of Iran to release those who have been arbitrarily detained, including journalists.
According to the statements of the head of the Tehran Journalists’ Guild, published on Tuesday, more than 100 journalists have been detained by the security and judicial forces of the Islamic Republic in the past year.
