The Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development has stated that 39 million Iranians are at risk of land subsidence.
Ali Beitallah, a member of the scientific board of the Iranian Center for Road and Urban Research, has said that based on the latest assessments and the compilation of all available maps, the approximate area of subsidence zones in the country is about 18.5 million hectares, which is equivalent to 11% of Iran’s land area.
According to him, the estimated number of people at risk of land subsidence in the country is around 39 million, which accounts for nearly 49% of the total population.
Mr. Beitallah has stated that the provinces of Tehran, Khorasan Razavi, and Isfahan have the highest population at risk of land subsidence, with Khorasan Razavi ranking first in terms of the extent of subsidence zones.
