Grossi remains as Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency

Rafael Grossi remains as the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Rafael Grossi has been reappointed for a second term of four years as the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

This decision came after the members of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency verbally agreed to his reappointment as the Director General, and there was no need for a formal vote to confirm his appointment. The verbal approval of the members was accompanied by praise and admiration for his leadership during his previous term.

However, this decision is subject to the official approval of the Agency in its annual meeting with the presence of all members in the fall of 2023.

Mr. Grossi’s current term as Director General will end in December of this year.

His first term as Director General was a turbulent period for the agency. Over the past three years, the Islamic Republic decided to gradually abandon its commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreements, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Now, after three years, Iran has taken significant steps beyond the JCPOA and effectively withdrawn from the agreement.
