Albania’s parliament approved an agreement with Italy to establish a refugee camp.
Albania’s parliament approved the controversial agreement with Italy to send asylum seekers to Albania. Edi Rama, the Prime Minister of Albania, and Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, signed this agreement last November.
According to this agreement, around 3,000 asylum seekers who are heading to Italy by sea will be held in two centers built and managed by Italy on Albanian soil until their asylum applications are processed.
Human rights groups have called this agreement shameful.
Opposition parties in Albania had recently tried to prevent the approval of this law by filing a complaint with the Constitutional Court, but their complaint was rejected.
Their argument was that refugee centers on Albanian soil managed by the Italian government would violate Albania’s national sovereignty.
However, judges of the Constitutional Court of Albania stated that parliament members can vote on this agreement.
