Former Iranian ambassador to Kabul says the Taliban fundamentally lack responsibility and are essentially foreign to it.
Reza Bahrami, the former Iranian ambassador to Kabul, described the recent meeting between the Taliban government delegation and the Helmand River Commissioners as inconclusive. He wrote on his Facebook page that the Taliban’s interaction in the recent meeting with the Helmand River Commissioners showed that they do not have the willingness to act on commitments and formal agreements and are essentially alien to responsibility.
The 27th meeting of the Helmand River Commissioners was held on 25th and 26th of Bahman in Zahedan, Iran, with the participation of representatives from the Taliban and Iranian officials.
According to some news agencies, Iranian representatives in this meeting demanded the removal of obstacles in paying Afghanistan’s water share and the non-construction of dams on the Helmand River route.
However, the Taliban have stated that due to recent droughts, many areas of Afghanistan, including the Helmand River, do not have enough water.
The Helmand River water sharing treaty was signed in 1351 solar year between the official representatives of the governments of Afghanistan and Iran at that time.
