German Chancellor: Serious criminals must be deported even if they are from Afghanistan or Syria

Serious criminals in Germany should be deported even if they are from Afghanistan or Syria.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today that serious criminals, even if they come from Afghanistan or Syria, should be deported from the country. Mr. Scholz made these remarks after the killing of a police officer by an Afghan asylum seeker in the city of Mannheim sparked widespread reactions in the country.

Mr. Scholz also stated that glorifying terrorist acts goes against all German values and in the future, refugees may face deportation as a punishment.

In his speech to the German parliament, he said, ‘Let me be clear, it angers me when someone who has sought refuge here in our country commits the most serious crimes. Such criminals should be deported, even if they come from Syria or Afghanistan.’

Since the return of the Taliban to power in 2021, Germany has stopped deporting Afghan asylum seekers, and Syrian refugees are also not deported from Germany because Syria is not considered safe due to its long-standing civil war.
