A Revolutionary Guard Commander Appointed as Governor of Sistan and Baluchestan

A Revolutionary Guard commander became the governor of Sistan and Baluchestan

The commander of the Quds Base of the Revolutionary Guard’s ground forces was appointed as the governor of Sistan and Baluchestan to prevent the continuation of protests that have been ongoing for 13 weeks.

On the verge of the two-month anniversary of the Bloody Friday in Zahedan, which marked the beginning of weekly protests by the Baluch people in Zahedan and several other cities in Baluchestan, the Cabinet of the Islamic Republic appointed the commander of the Quds Base of the Revolutionary Guard’s ground forces as the new governor of Sistan and Baluchestan.

Mohammad Karami, who had been the commander of the Quds Base of the Revolutionary Guard’s ground forces since 2019, a base that controls the Salman and Tharallah Corps in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan and Kerman, replaced Hossein Modarres Khiabani, who had served as the highest government representative in Sistan and Baluchestan for 15 months.

The appointment of Karami as the governor of Sistan and Baluchestan, at a time when weekly protests in Zahedan continued for the thirteenth consecutive week, could be a completely security-driven decision aimed at tighter control and harsher suppression in Baluchestan.
