China-Philippines Agreement on the South China Sea
After a series of intense confrontations between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea, both countries have reached an agreement. The agreement aims to prevent further escalation over the disputed territories claimed by both sides. Philippine government officials stated that this agreement was reached after a series of confidential meetings between Filipino and Chinese diplomats in Manila.
The objective of these negotiations was to establish a mutually acceptable solution regarding the Second Thomas Shoal, which is under Philippine control. According to reports from the French news agency, the Philippine Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that both countries have agreed on interim arrangements to meet the needs of Filipino forces stationed in the disputed shoal area.
Under this agreement, both parties recognized the need for de-escalation and dispute resolution through dialogue and negotiation. The two countries agreed that this agreement will not affect their respective positions in the South China Sea. Initially, no statements were issued by China regarding this agreement.
